The Annual Rose Prune!

Owning a rose garden is not only beautiful but also very rewarding. Yes, it is hard work and as we go through the seasons I am faced with every weather condition. During the hottest days the roses need to be picked and irrigated and during the coldest months I have the tedious task of pruning, weeding, checking irrigation and mulching well over 2000 rose bushes.

I start the prune at the end of June/early July. The first one is always the hardest. This is the moment I realise I will be on my knees and either in the cold or/and the rain for at least the next 6 weeks. This year I was blessed with a few sunny days to thor out the fingers.. something I will never take for granted!

Once I get stuck into the task I actually find pruning so satisfying. Every rose gets a hard cut back and strategically pruned to ensure all old wood and stems growing in the wrong direction are removed from the base of the rose bush, the remaining are cut back to ensure the strong healthy stems and those growing in the correct direction are kept. Each rose bush has all weeds removed from around the base and irrigation drippers are check to ensure they are ready for the spring season ahead.

Gone are the days when I used little secateurs or small tree loppers to get this job done. Now I am blessed with the new battery operated Stihl secateurs which make this job so much easier.

As I work my way through the aisles of roses I try to make piles of cuttings which makes the clean up so much easier as I pick up each pile with our little tractor and plop on top of the next before pushing the pile down with the tractor forks to bind them together and then repeating until the pile is an adequate size to take up to the burn off pile.... Yep.. a very large burn off pile. Between the tree and hedge clippings from clients properties of my husbands landscape gardening business and my roses our annual bon fire is almost an event and is usually celebrated with a few friends and a BBQ.

Once the tractor pick up is complete each aisle needs to be carefully raked up and the second tractor pick up is done. The rake up is so important as while the tractor tyres can withstand rolling over the thorns that are left behind our zero turn lawn mower tyres certainly cannot. There is a moment of silence and despair when Todd or I get ready to mow the lawns to find a flat tyre and the evidence of a rose thorn hanging out of the victim tyre - hence why the rake up needs to be performed thoroughly.

A second raking is then quickly done just to make sure every thorn has been picked up.

At this stage the rose garden is looking extremely different and although their are no longer any flowers in bloom I do think it looks quite beautiful with the neat lines of roses which are all at the same height... which I enjoy from a distance with a cup of tea as I contemplate the next big task of mulching... But that's another post ..so stay tuned!

Freeze Drying - The process and how it makes our beautiful rose petals amazing!

The Magic Behind Freeze-Dried Rose Petals

If you’ve ever held a freeze-dried rose petal in your hand, you’ll know they have an almost magical quality. Soft, vibrant, and beautifully preserved, they capture the romance of fresh blooms while lasting far longer. But what’s the secret behind these delicate treasures? Let’s take a peek into the fascinating process of freeze drying and why it’s perfect for creating rose petals that can be used for weddings, crafts, luxury decor, and more.

How Freeze Drying Works

Freeze drying — also called lyophilisation — is a gentle preservation method that removes moisture without damaging the delicate shape or colour of the petals. Here’s how it works:

  1. Freezing the Petals
Fresh rose petals are carefully picked at their peak, when the colour is rich and the shape perfect. They are then frozen to lock in their beauty instantly.

  2. Creating a Vacuum
Inside a freeze-drying chamber, the air is removed to create a vacuum. This allows water in the petals to skip the liquid stage entirely and change straight from ice to vapour — a process called sublimation.

  3. Gently Removing Moisture
As the ice crystals leave the petals, no heat damage occurs, meaning the petals retain their natural texture, shape, and vibrant colour.

  4. Ready for Long-Lasting Beauty
The end result? Petals that look almost exactly as they did when they were freshly picked — but with the bonus of being lightweight, biodegradable, and long-lasting.

Why Freeze-Dried Petals Are So Special

Because the petals are preserved naturally, without artificial colours or chemicals, they are perfect for:

  • Wedding Confetti – Light, soft, and biodegradable, they flutter beautifully in the air and look stunning in photos.

  • Craft Projects – Press them into handmade recycled paper, frame them in art, or use them in scrapbooking.

  • Hotel Suites & Events – Sprinkle on beds, tables, or bathtubs for a romantic touch that lasts the entire evening.

  • Bath Salts & Self-Care Products – Add petals to bath salts or soaps for a luxurious spa-like experience.

  • Decorations – Use them in centrepieces, candle displays, or wreaths for a natural pop of colour.

A Sustainable Choice

One of the best things about freeze-dried rose petals is their sustainability. They are 100% biodegradable, easy to store, and available year-round — so you can enjoy the beauty of roses in any season, without waste.

In Short: Freeze drying is like pressing the pause button on nature’s beauty. It’s a process that keeps roses looking fresh and vibrant for months (or even years), ready to add a romantic, colourful, and eco-friendly touch to your wedding, craft, event, or product.

How to Store Freeze-Dried Rose Petals:

Storing our freeze-dried rose petals is simple and stress-free. Unlike fresh petals, they don’t require refrigeration and won’t wilt or brown, thanks to the moisture-free freeze-drying process.

Once your petals arrive, we recommend keeping them sealed in their original bag to prevent them from absorbing moisture from the air. Store the bag inside the box they arrived in, and place it somewhere dry—like a cupboard, shelf, or bedroom drawer.

Avoid storing your petals in the fridge or freezer, as this can introduce unwanted moisture and compromise their quality. With proper storage, your petals will stay beautiful and ready to use whenever you need them.

For the best appearance and quality, we recommend using your petals within 8 weeks of receiving them. While they won’t turn brown, a small amount of natural humidity in the bag may cause the petals to soften slightly and gradually fade in color over time.

If you're planning to use the petals for a wedding or special event, we suggest opening the bag a day or two beforehand. This allows the petals to gently absorb some moisture from the air, which helps make them a little more flexible and reduces the risk of breakage when tossed as confetti.

Why Freeze-Dried Rose Petals Are a Brilliant Wholesale Choice

When most people think of rose petals, they imagine fresh blooms — fragrant, colourful, but gone within days. Freeze-dried rose petals offer all the beauty of fresh petals, but with a much longer shelf life, year-round availability, and a huge range of uses. That’s why they’re becoming a go-to wholesale option for florists, wedding professionals, product makers, and event venues.

Here’s why they’re worth adding to your wholesale offerings.

1. Long-Lasting Beauty

Freeze drying is a gentle preservation process that removes moisture without damaging the petals’ colour, shape, or texture. The result? Petals that look freshly picked, stay soft to the touch, and last for months or even years with proper storage.

2. Year-Round Availability

Unlike fresh petals, which are subject to seasonal availability, freeze-dried petals are available all year round. This means you can provide them for events in any season without worrying about weather or harvest times.

3. Eco-Friendly & Biodegradable

Our petals are 100% natural, chemical-free, and biodegradable — a perfect match for businesses and clients looking for sustainable, environmentally conscious choices.

Who Can Benefit from Wholesale Freeze-Dried Petals?

Florists – Offer petals as an add-on for bouquets, event décor, or romantic deliveries. They’re easy to store, quick to use, and never wilt.

Wedding Planners – Keep stock on hand for aisle scatterings, confetti tosses, table styling, and romantic turn-down service.

Wedding Venues – Have petals ready for every ceremony, reception, or styled photoshoot — without worrying about freshness or waste.

Paper & Stationery Companies – Incorporate petals into handmade recycled paper, wedding invitations, or gift tags for a luxury, textured finish.

Bath Salt & Body Product Businesses – Add a natural, luxurious touch to bath salts, soaps, and scrubs. Freeze-dried petals hold their shape and colour in packaging beautifully.

Funeral Homes & Memorial Services – Provide families with an elegant, biodegradable option for scattering ceremonies and farewells.

4. Easy to Store & Handle

Lightweight, compact, and not requiring refrigeration, freeze-dried petals are easy to keep in bulk — perfect for busy businesses where space and convenience matter.

5. A High-Impact, Low-Waste Option

Because they last so long, you can buy in bulk without worrying about waste. This makes them a cost-effective addition to your wholesale product range.

In Summary
Whether you’re a florist looking to upsell, a wedding planner aiming for that “wow” factor, a paper artist adding organic texture, or a business offering heartfelt farewells, freeze-dried rose petals are a versatile, sustainable, and stunning wholesale choice.

If you’d like to discuss wholesale supply or request a sample, we’d love to hear from you.

Do Freeze-Dried Rose Petals Stain?

Thanks to the freeze-drying process, our rose petals no longer carry the risk of staining like fresh petals can. Once the moisture is completely removed, the chance of color bleeding is significantly reduced or eliminated altogether.

For everyday uses such as wedding confetti, aisle decoration, funeral tributes, or general décor, our petals are safe to use without worry of staining. However, if moisture is reintroduced—through water, oils, or humidity—there is a chance that the petals could bleed color over time.

If you're using our petals in baths, spa treatments, or massages, we recommend being mindful of their contact with fabrics, especially porous or light-colored materials, as this may increase the chance of staining when petals are wet.

Darker shades like deep red, purple, or orange may be more likely to bleed than lighter tones, so please dispose of them carefully after use.

Why Freeze-Dried Rose Petals Are a Thoughtful Choice for Funerals and Ash Scatterings

In times of loss, it’s natural to want to honor a loved one with beauty and grace. Whether planning a funeral or an ash scattering ceremony, freeze-dried rose petals offer a meaningful and practical way to pay tribute. Here’s why they’re an excellent choice.

1. Symbolic and Beautiful

Roses have long been a symbol of love, remembrance, and respect. Freeze-dried rose petals maintain the natural beauty of fresh petals, providing a visually stunning element to any service. Their vibrant colors and soft textures offer a gentle, elegant way to say goodbye.

2. Eco-Friendly and Biodegradable

Unlike artificial petals, freeze-dried rose petals are completely natural and biodegradable. They decompose safely in the environment, making them a respectful choice for ash scatterings and outdoor memorial services. You can honor your loved one with the wildlife and environment in mind.

3. Long-Lasting and Versatile

Freeze-dried petals do not wilt or lose their shape like fresh flowers. This durability means they can be prepared well in advance of the ceremony without worrying about preservation. Whether used to line pathways, adorn memorial tables, or be released during an ash scattering, they remain beautiful throughout the event.

4. Easy to Transport and Store

Freeze-dried rose petals are lightweight and compact, making them easy to transport to various locations, including remote scattering sites. They can be stored for months without losing quality, ensuring they’re ready whenever needed.

5. Personal and Customizable

Available in a variety of colors, freeze-dried petals can match the preferences or personality of your loved one. Whether you choose classic red for love, white for purity, or a mix of hues, the petals can reflect the unique spirit of the person being honored.

A Gentle Farewell

In moments of remembrance, every detail matters. Freeze-dried rose petals offer a blend of beauty, sustainability, and practicality, helping create a heartfelt and respectful farewell. Consider incorporating these petals into your plans to add a meaningful touch to your tribute.
